Scrabble Scoring FAQ

There are several ways to score points in Scrabble. The first and most common way is that you earn points every time you play a word, but there are more way's. Bonus squares, blank tiles, and even finishing the game can all affect your final score.

On this page, we’ll explain exactly how Scrabble scoring works, and (since we are ScrabbleCheat) we’ll also show you how to use this knowledge to your advantage in your next game.

Points from Words

When you create a Scrabble word, you earn points based on the value of each letter. Every Scrabble letter has a value from 0 to 10 points. Blank tiles (jokers) are worth 0 points, even if placed on a bonus square, because 0x3 still equals 0.

Example:
You play the word “WALK”. The score is calculated as follows:

W=4, A=1, L=1, K=5, total = 11 points.

You can view a complete list of all Scrabble letters and their point values on our letter value page.

Points from TL, DL, TW, DW

The Scrabble board includes bonus squares: DL, TL, DW, and TW. These squares can significantly boost your word score.

Example:
You play the word “WALK” and the letter W lands on a TL (Triple Letter) square.

W=4×3=12, A=1, L=1, K=5, total = 19 points.

Without the bonus square TL, it would have been 11 points. You can read more about these bonus squares and their value on our page What is Scrabble.

End of Scrabble

A game of Scrabble can end in two ways. The first one is when a player places their final tiles on the scrabble board and there are no more tiles left in the bag. The second way is when all players pass their turn three times in a row, which ends the game immediately.

How final scoring works:

1. Most common ending
Each player adds up the points from the tiles left on their rack. These points are then subtracted from their total score. The player who used all their letters receives the combined total of those points as bonus.

2. Everyone passes
If all players skip their turn three times in a row, the game ends. Each player subtracts the value of the tiles remaining on their rack from their own total score. In this case, no bonus points are awarded.

Incorrect Scores

In the Scrabble GO app (or any version of Scrabble), scores are calculated automatically. However, due to a technical error or temporary delay, the app Scrabble might show an incorrect score.

If your score seems off, try restarting the game to fix it. When calculating your own score by hand, always remember to account for:

  1. TW, DW, TL, and DL bonus squares
  2. Blank tiles (worth 0)
  3. Scrabble Bingos
Scrabble Bingo

When you can play all seven of your tiles in one move, you earn a Scrabble Bingo, congrats! A Scrabble bingo is worth 50 points and these are added to the value of your word with 7 letters.p>

Example:
Your word has a total of 20 points, then your total will me 20+50=70 points.

Swapping

When a player is swapping tiles there are no points to be made. If you choose to swap tiles, your turn ends and the next player is at turn.

Skip turn

When a player decides to pass and skip their turn, no points can be scored during that round. Your turn ends and passes to the next player.

Unused tiles

A frequently asked questionin Scrabble, especially for new Scrabble players, is about unused tiles. Most players don't realize that they can actually receive negative points. So, once and for all: yes, unused tiels in Scrabble are subtracted from your total score when the game finishes.

Two players same score

When two (or more) players in Scrabble end with the exact same score, both players share that final score. In Scrabble, there is no such thing as a tiebreaker, or other special rules. The game simply ends in a draw.

What is a good score in Scrabble?

Scrabble players love to compare their scores, and for good and fun reason. A solid average Scrabble score is around 350 points, depending on skill level and board dynamics. This is calculated for a normal Scrabble board.
